Europech report: Italy and Greece dominate table and canning peach production in 2016


“Europech”is a report presenting an annual forecast about peach production in four European countries (Greece, Italy, Spain and France). According to the report, the forecast for the current year (2016) suggests that there will be reduction in table peaches production (-5%) as well as in cling peaches production (-2%) compared to the previous growing season. Furthermore, if we compare the production of the peaches this growing season in these four countries with the mean annual production of 2010/2014 the reduction increases to 20% for table peaches and to 17% for canning peaches. The respective reduction for nectarines is 7%. Italy is dominating the market of table peaches while Greece tops the list in canning peach production.

As we can see from the table above, the forecast of Europech suggests that Italy will dominate the market of table peaches with 536.341 tonnes of annual production while Greece will be the champion in canning peaches production, among the four european countries (315.000 tonnes).

The same table lists the estimates for the production of table, donut (only for Spain) and cling (canning) peaches and nectarines for 2016. The data of the table indicate that within the 4 countries:

  • There is a reduction in table peaches production (-5%) and in cling peaches production (-2%) comparing to the previous growing season.
  • If we compare the production of the peaches this growing season in these four countries with the mean annual production of 2010/2014 the reduction increases to 20% for table peaches and to 17% for canning peaches. The respective reduction for nectarines is 7%.

Data presented by country:

Greece: The production is expected to increase 3% in table peaches, 4% in nectarines and 4% in cling peaches comparing to the previous growing season, although that means a significant decrease 21% in table peach and 13 % in cling peach comparing to the mean annual production of 2010/2014. For nectarines this year’s production is expected to be 15% higher than the mean annual production of 2010/2014.

Spain: A decrease of 4% and 5% is expected in the 2016 production of table and cling peaches respectively, while nectarines production is expected to increase by 5%.

Italy: A decrease of 9% and 12% is expected in the 2016 production of table and cling peaches respectively, as well nectarines production is expected to decrease by 21%.

France: A decrease of 2% and 15% is expected in the 2016 production of table and cling peaches respectively, as well nectarines production is expected to decrease by 5%. Comparing to the mean annual production of 2010/2014, production in France is expected to decrease by 22% in table peaches, 15% in cling peaches and 36% in nectarines.
